Cracking the Queen’s Code

- Launched on the Anniversary of Mary’s Execution, Study Reveals 50 new Letters in Ciper – With Some Still Believed Missing – Shedding new light on her Captivity
- Prominent Mary Queen of Scots Historian Describes it as “Most Important new Find of 100 Years”
Since its founding in 1798, Taylor & Francis has enjoyed a reputation as a leading academic publisher committed to the highest quality of scholarly and academic publishing. The company publishes more than 2,500 journals spanning a vast range of subject areas and disciplines, serving a wide and diverse community of experts from a variety of geographies and backgrounds in disseminating groundbreaking research to the global academic community.
In December 2022, we were contacted by George Lasry, a computer scientist and cryptographer, who along with Norbert Biermann, a pianist and music professor, and Satoshi Tomokiyo, successfully decoded long-lost letters penned by Mary Queen of Scots while she was imprisoned in England by her cousin Queen Elizabeth I.
As the lead researcher, Lasry, and his interdisciplinary team, wanted to know if there was any interest among the general public at a global scale for such esoteric subject matter.
Given the timing, and relatively short window of opportunity for global media interest, we ensured the researchers that we could generate considerable interest in their research with smart and aligned PR and Social Media strategies. Working in partnership with T&F’s London-based Media Relations team, we devised a strategy that would surpass all expectations by embargoing the press materials and publication date until Feb 3, 2023, the anniversary of Mary Queen of Scots’ execution.
As a result of our strategic approach, we generated more than 1 billion gross impressions when we lifted the embargo, with all major consumer media platforms; in addition to helping drive heightened interest in cryptology and spiking submissions to the quarterly academic publication Cryptologia.
The successful effort also helped to broaden awareness of the parent company, Taylor & Francis, and its’ vast reach in scholarly publishing through increased website traffic and breaking research submissions in other publications within the company’s portfolio.
